    Product Description

Lake Red Pigment is a pigment created by dye precipitation with a chemically-inert binder, called a "mordant" (typically a metallic salt), forming a uniform liquid which is then used as a paint color. The organic lake pigments are distinct from ultramarine, vermilion, and other pigments, all of which are created from powdered minerals. There are numerous omissions of "lake" in the names of suppliers and manufacturers to industry and artists. Since the dyes are not lightfast, many pigments are fugitive. It is frequently employed as translucent glaze to display the hues of expensive fabrics and drapery in Renaissance and Baroque paintings. By the addition of alum, the soluble components were turned into the insoluble lake pigment (potassium aluminum sulphate). Yellow lakes contain some type of calcium carbonate, most likely chalk.
